North Korean state-run media on Tuesday blasted President Trump‘s assertion that he commands a “much bigger” nuclear arsenal than Kim Jong Un, calling the comment “the spasm of a lunatic.”
“The spasm of Trump in the new year reflects the desperate mental state of a loser who failed to check the vigorous advance of the army and people of the DPRK,” a commentary in the state-run Rodong Sinmun newspaper said, using the acronym for the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the North’s formal name.
“He is making [a] bluff only to be diagnosed as a psychopath,” the commentary said. The Associated Press reported on the remarks.
Trump tweeted earlier this month that his nuclear launch button was “much bigger” and “more powerful” than Kim’s, after the North Korean leader said in a New Year’s day address that he had such a button sitting on the desk in his office.
Trump and North Korean officials have traded barbs over the past year as tensions between their two countries increased.
During the same time, the North has signaled a number of advancements in its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs. In his New Year’s day speech this month, Kim declared that the international community would have to accept North Korea as a nuclear-armed state.
The war of words increased fears of a confrontation between the U.S. and North Korea, which was underscored over the weekend when a false alert dispatched to cellphones in Hawaii warned of an incoming ballistic missile.
