As Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) is facing multiple allegations of having a poor working environment for female workers — ranging from verbal abuse to sexual harassment — people have been calling for him to resign. Now, former female staffers have issued a statement in defense of the man who was once their boss.

“We do not condone or justify sexual harassment and believe the ongoing national debate is important,” the statement reads. “While we do not pass judgment on the specific allegations reported in the press or the women who brought them, our experiences with Mr. Conyers were quite different than the image of him being portrayed in the media.
“Mr. Conyers was a gentleman and never behaved in a sexually inappropriate manner in our presence. He was respectful, valued our opinions, challenged our thinking, and treated us as professionals,” it adds.
The statement included how those who signed believe in due process and support the ethics investigation to be conducted.
Conyers has other defenders that include House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. While speaking with Chuck Todd on “Meet the Press” on Sunday, she voiced her support for his work in the House, calling Conyers an “icon.”
“We are strengthened by due process. Just because someone is accused, and was it one accusation, is it two? John Conyers is an icon in our country,” Pelosi said. “He’s done a great deal to protect women.”
