As more and more allegations misbehavior by Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) come to light, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was asked on “Meet the Press” Sunday if he should resign. Pelosi deflected and called him an “icon.”
“You said there’s now zero tolerance. John Conyers. What does that mean for him? Right now — in or out?” Todd asked.
“We are strengthened by due process. Just because someone was accused, was it one accusation, was it two? John Conyers is an icon in our country,” Pelosi responded.
“He’s done a great deal to protect women,” she continued. “The right wing is now quoting as me praising him for his work on that, and he did great work on that.”
When pressed by Todd on whether the congressman should resign, Pelosi said she believes Conyers will do the right thing: “He will do the right thing in terms of what he knows about his situation, that he’s entitled to due process.”
Conyers is accused of having an almost-hostile workplace for his female subordinates. Ethics lawyer Melanie Sloan claims he would regularly criticize her appearance and even held a meeting with her in his underwear.
BuzzFeed News was first to report on the allegations after it obtained documents from former staffers who said Conyers engaged in sexual misconduct with multiple women.
